Force Majeure is full of emotional crises

By Jenny Alvarez

Written and directed by Östlund (Play, Involuntary), Force Majeure is dramatic, intriguing, challenging and disturbing. Tomas (Johannes Bah Kuhnke), and his willowy wife Ebba (Lisa Loven Kongsli) and their two blond, pre-teen children – travels to the picturesque French Alps to enjoy a few days of skiing. But during lunch at a mountainside restaurant, an avalanche turns everything upside down. With panicked diners fleeing in all directions, Ebba calls out for her husband as she tries to protect their children. Tomas, however, makes a decision that will shake the family’s world to its core. Although the anticipated disaster fails to occur, his marriage now hangs in the balance as he struggles to reclaim his role as family patriarch.

Despite of the snowballing tension and friction between the characters, this film is precisely observed psychodrama in which masculinity is satirized and full of hidden prejudices. Ebba is dealing with a near-death experience and feeling abandoned so here all the members of the family are affected mainly when the husband who reflects certain cowardice because he grabbed his phone and gloves and runs away from the oncoming torrent of avalanche, effectively abandoning his family in the process. Definitely is a film full of intense moments of pain and regret. Here is when the family must now deal with the fact that Tomas chose his own well-being over that of his family.

The Liberator comes full of ideas

A Simon Bolivar’s life comes with The Liberator, a film full of good nature scenes, and historical information. Directed by Alberto Arvelo and written by Timothy J. Sexton. The impassioned struggle of Simón Bolívar’s (Édgar Ramírez) fight for independence in Latin America from Spain and his vision of a united South American nation. During 1hr. 59 min. the viewer will enjoy many idealistic characters. A title tells the viewers that it’s 1828. The man hands his sword to one side in a humble manner. Definitely, a film that involves lost love, military heroism, betrayed loyalties and banking (courtesy of poorly developed visitations from Danny Huston as a British moneybags).Simon shows dramatically a real leader inspiring enough — to follow into battle. Many of the sceneries and locations are beautiful and the music is really majestic and well structured by the L.A. Philharmonic’s Gustavo Dudamel adds to the majesty, layering more drama atop this historic drama.

Andrew Neyman (Milles Teller) is an ambitious young jazz drummer, single-minded in his pursuit to rise to the top of the east coast music conservatory. Plagued by the failed writing career of his father, Andrew hungers day and night to become one of the greats. Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), an instructor equally known for his teaching talents as for his terrifying methods, leads the top jazz ensemble in the school. Fletcher discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into his band, forever changing the young man’s life. Andrew’s passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into obsession, as his ruthless teacher continues to push him to the brink of both his ability – and his sanity. During 1 hr. 46 min, this great Director and writer Damien Chazelle shows a tremendous with excellent psychological intensity in the main characters especially when some experience becomes in wisdom for certain talents. Especially when Andrew is a dedicated student with big dreams of becoming one of the greatest jazz drummers but J.K. Simmons demands the best effort even in some moments looks like disharmony in each other. In few words is a well structured movie drama with intensity, vulnerability, and depth in feelings and ambition. Good ambience and locations but the best part is the background music. Definitely is a mind game and a film that reflects our way in life.
